At least until we have an optical solution. What is the best magnet to use and what is the best way to mount them?
A weak magnet results in close (very sensitive) roller sensor board placement. Since cyclo-computer magnets aren't very strong, which means rare earth magnet are more appropriate. The downside is that they don't have a very good mounting options, or do they? I just found out they make countersunk ring magnets that could be held down with a screw on the side of the roller, maybe even sitting in a hole drilled for the diameter of the magnet. That way the magnet isn't an obstacle on the surface of the roller, not to mention glue / tape / zip ties aren't the only thing fighting the centrifugal forces.
I have some heavy duty rare earth magnets around, but what we ended up doing is getting some of those replacement thumb-screw spoke magnets made for cycle computers (like this), drilling a very small hole in the side of the roller, then just gluing the post in. By far the most stable thing we tried, strong enough to trigger the sensor, and readily available at most bike stores. - GHXC
