At least until we have an optical solution. What is the best magnet to use and what is the best way to mount them?

A weak magnet results in close (very sensitive) roller sensor board placement. Since cyclo-computer magnets aren't very strong, which means rare earth magnet are more appropriate. The downside is that they don't have a very good mounting options, or do they? I just found out they make countersunk ring magnets that could be held down with a screw on the side of the roller, maybe even sitting in a hole drilled for the diameter of the magnet. That way the magnet isn't an obstacle on the surface of the roller, not to mention glue / tape / zip ties aren't the only thing fighting the centrifugal forces.

How is everyone else mounting their magnets?

I'm actually just duct taping a rare earth magnet to the outermost ridge of the krietler roller drum. Low tech, cheap, and surprisingly effective.

I have some heavy duty rare earth magnets around, but what we ended up doing is getting some of those replacement thumb-screw spoke magnets made for cycle computers (like this), drilling a very small hole in the side of the roller, then just gluing the post in. By far the most stable thing we tried, strong enough to trigger the sensor, and readily available at most bike stores. - GHXC

glad to see someone tried those cyclocomputer magnets with success. always seemed to me to be a good option.

We ended up using the cateye wheel magnets (got them online for ~$4), then drilled and tapped the rear roller and mounted with Locktite:

Has anyone secured their magnets with epoxy? Any reports on how well that technique works? Is there any chance of the magnet flying off?

I used epoxy to affix the magnets to the outside of my rollers and have not had any of the bonds fail.
