HI, We just held our first Opensprint event in Jackson Hole, WY. Everything went great except we had no idea how to make the projector work. I have googled and searched for advice on this format, but I'm an Linux rookie and don't really understand much of what people are talking about in regards to making a projector work. Can someone give me some basic step by step directions on how to make it happen? Do I need to download an app? I went to preferences --> Display and clicked on the mirror screen box, but it did not detect another monitor. I'm experimenting with a second monitor first instead of hooking up the projector. I assume that if another monitor works then a projector will work. Thanks for any advice! Scott
Look on your keyboard. Most will have a Function (Fn) key that is usually in blue. Then look for another usually F5 or F7 that let's you switch monitors. Hold the Fn Key and press the second key. That should allow you to send the signal to the projector.
no luck with the function keys. When I go to preferences --> Display Preferences and click either "mirror screens" or "detect monitors" the second monitor is not detected...
I've searched all the ubuntu forums I can find and can't seem to figure this out.
It must be a HP and Ubuntu issue then. I just hooked up my Acer One to a projector tonight. I have no problem with the projector detecting the connection and trying to optimize the display. I did have an issue or two but it is just a resolution thing. I posted about it at http://www.goldsprintsfx.org/2010/02/05/goldsprints-fx-projector-testing/
If you are using the USB Flash Drive, I would let the computer boot up normally and see if you can use a second monitor/projector in windows. If you can't then you have a hardware issue. If that issue is consistent with both a projector and a monitor, I would start to question the laptop's graphics card -- in which case I would try a different laptop.
Try System-->Preferences-->Display in the upper left hand toolbar.
If you are familiar with changing display settings in windows, this might help. You don't need to install anything, just:
Goto "System-->Preferences-->Display" in the upper left hand toolbar.
Click on the "Detect Monitors" button.
Under the words "Drag the monitors to set their place." Drag the one monitor to the side, if your computer was able to detect the other one, it will be underneath.
If you see the other monitor, you should be ready to roll, and you can tweak the resolution from here.
Fitz:What if I tried to run 9.10 instead of 9.04?
When it comes to OpenSprints, 9.10 works for some people, not for others. So I would play it safe and try to get it working under 9.04
This might be totally useless, but under 8.1 you have to:
1. let the computer boot up normally 2. then connect the projector 3. then go to screenrez under system preferences (i think? maybe administrator system something? ahh, i'm at work and don't have my netbook with me) 4. then set the projector to the right screen resolution. then it all works
if you don't let the thing boot up first things get all wild, and until you set the screen resolution from off to something (800X600 always works for me). I know you are running a newer version of Ubuntu, hey, maybe hauling the whole thing back to 8.1 wouldn't be such a bad idea:)
